Dear Colleague,

Would you share this email with your staff and other colleagues in Los Angeles
about a daylong training we are hosting at the California Endowment in Los
Angeles? Thanks to a generous grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of 
Los
Angeles, we will be offering our day-long training It Happens, It Matters on
September 14th and again on September 15th at no cost to attending 
individuals.

It Happens, It Matters is a training about male sexual victimization, which
offers a primer on the basic concepts, theories and approaches to working with
male survivors to front-line professionals and volunteers. In many respects,
the training can serve as a prerequisite for participants wanting to engage in
effective intervention strategies with this population.

This day-long training provides a condensed orientation of this issue to
front-line workers who serve male survivors in the course of their duties
including victim services staff, child protection workers, and law enforcement
officers.

Rick Goodwin will facilitate the 1-day training, It Happens, It Matters. Rick
is a clinician and trainer on issues concerning men’s mental health. Much of
his work over the past twenty years has focused on male sexual trauma –
managing both regional and national initiatives in Canada. Along with leading
the development of the 1in6 training initiative, he now conducts training for
professionals on issues of male sexual trauma and recovery as well as
facilitates the online trauma recovery group services.

Rick's training work on gender and violence has taken him to Jamaica, England,
Cambodia as well as India. Rick co-authored Men & Healing: Theory, Research 
and
Practice with Male Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (2009) – a guidebook
that is now being used to formulate services internationally. Rick was also
lead investigator for Health Canada in the correlation between men’s
experience of HIV and sexual violence.
