Hi Katie,
I would strongly recommend that you contact Peggie Reyna from Peace Over Violence.  She runs the Deaf/HoH program. I'm sure that she has faced some of these challenges as well. Back when I worked there (it was LACAAW back then), our Deaf self-defense instructors and hotline advocates used their credibility to the community to build connections.  You've probably seen that hearing people don't have much sway with this community.

At LACAAW, Linda Bove (of Sesame Street fame) was one of our self-defense instructors. She then switched to Kids Self Defense and Safety. She obviously knows the issues. I don't think she's involved anymore but maybe you'll need to invite a Deaf celebrity such as Linda to draw the students in. There certainly are plenty in your neighborhood.

Good luck. I'm sure a lot of your students were mainstreamed, so they may have not gotten much in the way of basic sex education in K-12, let alone violence awareness.

Feel free to call me if you need an ear.

Best,
Claire

Hello,
I have a meeting set up with the our university's title IX coordinator and a psychologist on campus to address how we can better collaborate our efforts to come up with an effective and comprehensive training program addressing sexual assault prevention specific in the deaf community. As you may  know,  sexual assault is 2-3 times higher in the deaf and hard of hearing community, primarily due to communication difficulties, lack of access to self defense training and poor self esteem.

We already provide training, however, the outreach is often met with dismal lack of attendance or disinterest. Perhaps this is not unusual but I am thinking that we could have a dialog to develop a more cohesive and structured program that could be offered to both female and male students addressing issues of appropriate sexual conduct on a regular basis i.e. at the beginning of every semester prior to increased course load demands, etc. Does anyone have experience with best practices and how to implement new mandatory trainings?
Thank you,
