Health Educator

 

A full-time, 12 month Health Educator position is available at the University Health Service, University of Rochester. The Health Educator plans, implements, and evaluates theory- and evidence-based health promotion strategies, programs, and services for University of Rochester students and collaborates with key campus and community partners to develop a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to health promotion and harm reduction.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

1.   Develop strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for health promotion programs and services, focusing on college health issues such as alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, violence prevention, sexual misconduct, and other health topics relevant to college students.

2.   Conduct and analyze student health surveys. Identify program needs and priorities. Track trends in student health status and behavior. Target and respond to areas of concern.

3.   Present orientation, training, and programs for incoming freshmen and transfer students, RAs, fraternities and sororities, and student groups on the River Campus and the Eastman School of Music.

4.   Direct the BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students) Program. Provide BASICS interventions for individual students referred by the Office of the Dean of Students and Residential Life for alcohol and marijuana use.

5.   Teach the Peer Health Advocacy course (PH 216), a four credit academic course offered as part of the Public Health major that prepares students to advocate for healthy behaviors and attitudes among their peers.

6.   Plan, develop, and implement communication strategies to share health information and program information with students through printed materials, social media, the Internet, and other means.    

7.   Collaborate with the Office of the Dean of Students, Title IX Coordinator, University Counseling Center, Fraternity/Sorority Affairs, Dining Services, Residential Life, student groups, and community organizations.

8.   Serve on university-wide committees to advise policy changes and procedures related to the health of college students. Represent the UHS Health Promotion Office at meetings in the College and the Eastman School of Music. Develop and foster a network with health promotion and college health professionals at the University, local, state, and national levels. Serve as a resource for students, faculty and staff, and community partners.

 

Qualifications: Master's degree in public health, health promotion, health education, or equivalent education in related field with a minimum of 2 years related health promotion experience, preferably in a college or university setting. CHES desired. Evidence of ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students required. Excellent organizational and communication skills required.
