The Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention (VSAP) at the University of Central Missouri is accepting applications for the Assistant Director. The Assistant Director is a key member of the VSAP team and collaborates closely with the Director to plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-informed alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and violence prevention campus initiatives. UCM's VSAP office has been recognized nationally as a model program; the office has received grants from the US Office of Violence Against Women, the US Department of Education, the US Department of Justice Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws program, and the Missouri Division of Health and Senior Services.

University of Central Missouri Staff Position Vacancy: 

Assistant Director of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention

The primary function of the Assistant Director in the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention is to direct and oversee all office programs and services designed to reduce alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and gender violence (ATODV) among students at the University of Central Missouri. This individual must have a broad knowledge base in prevention theory and a strong skill base in prevention practice. The Assistant Director trains, supervises, and evaluates 4-6 program staff; trains and advises two peer education groups; coordinates the provision of tobacco cessation and alcohol or other drug motivational interviewing services; and ensures the implementation of ongoing, comprehensive awareness and educational programs on ATODV.

 

The Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention (VSAP) works closely with campus and community partners to assess student needs and create, implement, and evaluate best practice initiatives to address gender violence and high risk and underage alcohol use, tobacco use, and other drug use, and to increase the capacity of our community to address these issues. 

 

The Asst. Director will supervise a grant funded 1.0 FTE for Gender Violence Prevention, a GA for Motivational Interviewing, a Learning to Greater Degree undergraduate Intern, a part time temporary staff person, and any additional grant-funded staff. The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention, who reports to the Assoc. VP for Student Experience and Engagement. 

 

Duties include:

 

  • Train, supervise and evaluate 4-6 VSAP staff members, including Graduate Assistants, temporary or part time staff members,Learning to Greater Degree Interns, and additional grant funded staff as hired. Conduct weekly staff meetings, one on one meetings, and ongoing training. Oversee staff as they design, develop, implement and evaluate ATODV educational programs. Ensure programs have accurate content and are consistent with prevention theory and adult learning theory. Design and present educational programs as needed.  
  • Chair UCM Green Dot Implementation Task Force to develop and implement the 3-pronged campus program including a social marketing campaign, periodic 6-hour bystander intervention trainings, and classroom programs.
  • Oversee the mandated and self-referral process for alcohol and other drug use. Collaborate with Residence Life and Accounts Payable to oversee cost recovery process. Provide periodic reports about the program. Ensure quality control of brief motivational interviews through training, observation and evaluation of staff. Conduct brief motivational interviews as needed. 
  • Coordinate VSAP’s tobacco cessation program, including training and evaluating coaches, ensure the program is well advertised, maintain records, and oversee the ongoing quality improvement process. Provide coaching as needed. 
  • Advise, support, and/or provide training for student organizations including: Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA), MoMen (Healthy Masculinity Group) and Recovery Central. Approve use of departmental funds for student organization programs.
  • Coordinate VSAP marketing committee. Approve all VSAP social norms marketing and social media campaign messages. Develop budget for campaigns and approve expenditures. Regularly identify data points to share with students and conduct periodic focus groups to evaluate the campus climate regarding ATODV. Develop strategies to address priority issues identified through these groups.
  • Represent UCM and VSAP at monthly Missouri Partners in Prevention state-wide coalition meetings. Represent VSAP director in her absence.
  • Prepare and conduct presentations and training with student groups such as residence halls, fraternities and sororities, etc. Serve as guest lecturer in academic classes such as health, AE1400 and social work classes.  Provide group sanctions to student organizations, including environmental management consultations and SWOC analysis. Serve as a consultant tostudents on prevention best practice.
  • Provide advocacy to victims of sexual assault who may disclose in a program or at the Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention office.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF THE POSITION

 

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Certified Reciprocal Prevention Specialist (CRPS) or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred
  • Motivational Interviewing trained preferred
  • Two years experience in the following required (all experience listed may be gained concurrently): Project implementation or programming: Work within the field of gender violence prevention, substance abuse prevention or related health promotion field; Public speaking, teaching or training; Student organization advising, working with groups of volunteers, or similar experience
  • Experience in the following preferred (volunteer, practicum, internship accepted): Supervision of employees, Brief motivational interviewing, Social norms marketing, Bystander intervention skills training, Tobacco cessation coaching
