Yes, and on our end, Presidents and Title IX Coordinators are hearing a consistent message from ATIXA that they need to be supporting advocacy positions and prevention initiatives. The ATIXA checklist was intended to help preventionists make the case to their senior administrators about the resources needed to achieve compliance.  One way you might leverage this moment is to approach the Title IX Coordinator about using the prevention staff to help the Coordinator to meet their training mandates.  The Coordinator is likely overwhelmed with policy and caseload, and is not able to address all of their training obligations without help.  Deputies in the prevention area, and help with that load could give you inroads to key audiences with prevention messages that accompany policy training, and be a critical support for your campus’ Title IX Coordinator and thus essential as they consider their future budget allocations.

Hi Pat,

It's been a while since I worked in Res Life at UIUC, but I remember that time and your good work fondly and hope you are doing well.

At the University of Delaware, we have also had new Title IX positions and structures created.  Those of us who have been working on initiatives for a number of years are trying to capitalize on the current energy and commitment around sexual assault and work with our Title IX Coordinator to put forth a number of recommendations regarding funding for education/prevention programs and strengthened advocacy options on campus.  We have the added focus that comes from being on the OCR investigation list.  Nevertheless, now might be the time for a serious argument to your Chancellor or Board for funding directed toward initiatives you recommend.

Good luck & keep the faith!

Does anyone else out there ponder the long term impact of taking scarce dollars in higher education in our current economy and putting them towards all these newly created “Title IX” positions…rather than increase education/prevention programs and support/advocacy services? Don’t get me wrong, I firmly believe that our colleges/universities need to be accountable but it’s hard to remain positive when so many of our (already inadequately funded) programs and services face budget cuts!
