we are extremely fortunate at our University to have several available options to survivors for counseling.  Our University Counseling Program offers free counseling for students.  We have also received support to contract with our local community-based nonprofit/advocacy program, the Sexual Assault Counseling Center, to have a part-time counselor available to students through our office.

The contracted counselor also assists with hospital outreaches to eliminate the need for the survivor to repeat their story and help provide see less support.  Being this counselor is contracted with our campus-based advocacy program, the survivor can choose whether to be seen on or off-campus.  The counselor utilizes trauma-informed approaches and can conduct long-term therapy for free ( thanks to grants received by the nonprofit).  Our counselor partners with our campus-based counseling program to offer trauma-informed support groups for both students and community members.

This has been an invaluable service for our students and University.  I'd be happy to share more with anyone who is interested!

Hello colleagues,

I have a few questions about the types of counseling services your institution offers survivors.  I would greatly appreciate whatever information you are able to provide.  It will really help us think critically about effective counseling models for survivors of sexual violence.

  1. What services does the counseling center at your University provide for sexual assault & intimate partner violence survivors? Does the center provide short or long-term therapy?

  2. Does your counseling center conduct a support group for survivors of trauma?  If so, is it an open or closed group?  Do you have any literature that cites this as a best practice?

  3. Does your counseling center see students in the summer if they are not enrolled in classes?

Thanks very much,

Anne
