Greetings:
For what it’s worth, given my background and experience, bystander intervention training that does not adequately address the legal issues (e.g. legal duty to intervene, legal responsibility for subsequent injury/death, civil aiding and abetting, homeowners insurance, amnesty, etc.) falls short of advising students of all the issues they must consider. For example, in the death and sexual violence cases we handle, numerous students are regularly named as defendants, compelled to defend themselves with legal counsel, and compensate the victim(s) for their legal responsibility as a “bystander.” Often, this type of information is most effective in changing behavior.
I hope such issues are included in the presentations schools are giving.
All the best.

Hi all,
We at UIUC have been developing a new bystander intervention workshop to build on our existing mandatory program for first-year students. Alan Berkowitz has been our consultant, and we’re using a peer-facilitated, dialogue- and activity-based model that we’ll pilot to 10 groups this semester (including fraternities, sororities, student-athlete leaders, and more), with the hope to expand more next year. We’ll be doing a pre- and post-evaluation as well. I am happy to answer more specific questions from anyone about our process! We’re pretty excited!

Good Morning Colleagues,
We are in the planning process of developing our on bystander intervention, train-the-trainer program, for our campus community. I would love to hear from institutions that have created their own programs in order to gather insight on curriculum development, implementation, etc. Any sharing of information/resources would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me directly at
