Hi Juliette – I asked our research specialist to check into this.  Here is her response:

While I was researching the origin of this statistic, I was stunned at how many DV resources quote this stat without citing its source. It took me a while before I found a publication that provided a citation.

The statistic appears to have come from K. J. Ferraro’s 1997 article, “Battered women: Strategies for survival”, which was published in Albert Cardarelli’s book Violence Between Intimate Partners: Patterns, Causes, and Effects. The problem is, neither document is available online or present in the NSVRC library, so I can’t confirm that the stat is indeed mentioned.

The good news is that I found a dirt cheap ($0.01) used copy of the book on Amazon, which I have ordered. The book should arrive in a few days, after which I’ll see if the 7x statistic is there.

I’ll let you know what we find out!

In Partnership,

Jen Grove

Subject: average time it takes a DV survivor to leave citation?

Hey folks -

I'm having a hard time finding this citation, any help would be greatly appreciated!

"On average a DV survivor tries to leave seven times before they are successful."

Thanks
