Hello everyone, At Tulane, we have a 24/7 student-run confidential hotline for students affected by sexual assault, dating violence/abuse, and stalking. I advise and train
the organization. The students go through 40 hours of training in order to work on the hotline (about two weekends of in-person training plus some online training). The students’ one-on-one advocacy services are strictly limited to the hotline – they will
not meet a survivor in person. The organization also engages in peer education and community-level advocacy work on the campus and in the community. Happy to share materials or further details about the organization with anyone who is interested. Jessica – in response to your question about on-call advocacy services, that is provided through professional staff at Tulane. We have about 8 staff members
in Housing who provide our first level of on-call. They get notified of all incidents (from a transport to the hospital for a serious ankle sprain sustained playing flag football to the more serious incidents like a suicide attempt or a sexual assault).
The on-call staff for Housing provides any needed immediate response to the more lower-level incidents and notifies the second tier of on-call of the more serious incidents. The second tier of on-call is through our office, Student Resources and Support Services.
Up until a couple months ago it was shared by two staff members in our office – myself and a colleague. We recently just added a third person (yay!) to our rotation. Our line of on-call responds to the more serious issues like a mental health hospitalization
or a sexual assault. If desired, we will go to the hospital with a survivor, etc. Happy to share more details or materials about our on-call system for advocacy. I would appreciate this info as well. For those of you using students as advocates to provide 24 hr/after hours advocacy do you also have a professional staff on call as well? If not, who provides support to those students working after
hours? If it's professional staff, how many pro staff do you have who are on-call 24 hrs (i.e. working a regular shift during the day and then also being on call at night if student advocates need support)? How do you distribute the on-call responsibilities
among pro staff? Thanks, Jessica
