Dear Colleagues,
I am so excited to introduce the debut of the documentary film, MY MASCULINITY HELPS (MMH), by Marc A. Grimmett and David Hambridge. MMH explores the role of African American men and boys in the prevention of sexual violence, while also demonstrating understanding and support for survivors. The film serves as a counter-narrative to often inaccurate and misleading portrayals of African American masculinity. MMH was supported by an Office on Violence Against Women grant, which was managed by the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
To see the trailer, for information on the film and co-directors, and to schedule a screening, visit: www.mymasculinityhelps.com or contact Marc at or (919) 622-3504
I had the honor of working with Marc and David as the consulting producer of the film over the past two years. While I am certainly biased, (Marc is my partner), I cannot emphasize enough that they are incredibly authentic, passionate, open, thoughtful, and kind men. This comes through in MMH, which is why I believe it has connected so well with the many local folks who have attended its screenings. The most recent screening was at Duke University,
“I wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the documentary. I left the [screening location] feeling uplifted, empowered and informed. Not very often does someone present alternative, positive representations of black male identity. You did an amazing job! I’m still grappling with the questions I raised regarding gender normativity and the black church.”~Marcus Benning, male undergraduate student in History and Linguistics at Duke University
MY MASCULINITY HELPS is a powerful tool to engage boys and
men in the deconstruction of gender roles, masculinity, and power and in the
prevention of sexual violence. It can be used in schools, colleges, and
athletic, professional, community, and faith-based organizations. MMH can also help with meeting Campus SaVE Act requirements.
The MY MASCULINITY HELPS DVD is available through the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault Please email NCCASA () to request a copy. The MY MASCULINITY HELPS DVD is free + shipping and handling costs.
