first premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and then going on to

SALMA makes its New York premiere this month at the Human Rights Watch Film 
Festival, with screenings at The IFC Center and The Film Society of Lincoln

As with her previous work (PINK SARIS, ROUGH AUNTIES, SISTERS IN LAW), master 
documentarian Kim Longinotto trains her camera on another iconoclastic woman. 
When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old, 
her family began holding her captive, forbidding her to study and forcing her 
into marriage. For the following 25 years, words were Salma's only salvation. 
She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an 
intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house and into the hands 
of a publisher. Against all odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet, 
inciting her own freedom and challenging the traditional code of conduct in
