Women Make Movies is thrilled to announce the educational release of Kim
Longinotto's newest feature, SALMA. SALMA continues an amazing festival run,
first premiering at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and then going on to
successful screenings at Berlin International Film Festival and Hot Docs.
SALMA makes its New York premiere this month at the Human Rights Watch Film
Festival, with screenings at The IFC Center and The Film Society of Lincoln
Center. For tickets and more information, visit the Human Rights Watch Film
Festival website <http://ff.hrw.org/film/salma?city=5>.
As with her previous work (PINK SARIS, ROUGH AUNTIES, SISTERS IN LAW), master
documentarian Kim Longinotto trains her camera on another iconoclastic woman.
When Salma, a young Muslim girl in a south Indian village, was 13 years old,
her family began holding her captive, forbidding her to study and forcing her
into marriage. For the following 25 years, words were Salma's only salvation.
She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper and, through an
intricate system, was able to sneak them out of the house and into the hands
of a publisher. Against all odds, Salma became the most famous Tamil poet,
inciting her own freedom and challenging the traditional code of conduct in
her village. Read more.
