Hi Emily,
The UVA Women's Center couldn't survive without private donors and grants
from foundations. Our state money has been cut so much that all we have
left is salaries and nothing else. Is there an alumni engagement office
at Kennesaw State? I'm sure there's a development office. Make friends
with them. The alumni people and development people probably work tougher
constantly, as this is the best source of private donations. Also check
into small corporate foundations and family foundations, as they often
have an interest in issues related to your work. You have to go online
and check them out, but there are some around. For example, the Community
Foundation of Central Georgia (assuming you are in their territory, may be
a good source of funds for you http://www.cfcga.org/. The development
office probably can search for promising sources of funding--and make sure
that you aren't stepping on anyone's toes at the University who may also
be submitting RFFs. Maybe work on a campaign with both units that's
connected to some kind of significant milestone for you--like an
anniversary. Creativity is the key. And remember that any money you bring
into the Univ will be money that they can brag about, so even if they are
hesitant at first, convince them that you might be able to bring in funds
from foundations and alumni who otherwise would never give. It took us
awhile to get "in" with UVA's Development Office, but now they are our
best friends. Even their regional officers work on identifying potential
donors for us because they know that many people (mostly women but not
always) believe in what we are doing.
Good luck!
Claire
