Community Health Specialist-Prevention Coordinator for Alcohol and Other Drugs

Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. The most relevant degree areas include public health, health promotion, health education/wellness, social work, counseling, alcohol and other drug misuse prevention or community organizing. Other relevant degree areas will be considered. A Master's Degree is preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Minimum of three years full-time professional work experience related to outreach and health promotion or health education; experience with strategies to advance health at the community level through influence on policy, environment, culture and individual behavior. This position will play a significant role in the prevention of high risk drinking and alcohol-related harm, as well as initiatives to prevent harm from tobacco and other drugs. Experience in the prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other substance use related problems is valued. Experience in an academic environment providing health promotion and wellness education services to college students is preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills, including skills in public presentations and the ability to engage students; proven ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders; demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and organizations that reflect a broad range of identities, perspectives, and experiences.

Knowledge of and experience with effective strategies to generate change in large institutions, creating sustainable networks across diverse populations, and issues of student development, meeting facilitation and communication strategies. Demonstrated ability to develop new strategies from existing data, conduct assessments, set priorities among competing issues. Ability to provide leadership both with and without authority, and to work effectively in a collaborative environment. Demonstrated project and grants management experience, previous experience that demonstrates strong organizational skills. Experience in developing health communication strategies and products and writing grant proposals a plus.

Principal duties:

The focus of the Community Health Specialist is the design, development, and implementation of prevention-based outreach and health promotion/education services that address key health issues of UW-Madison students. An emphasis will be placed on the prevention of high risk drinking. Collaborate with students, prevention specialists, and other relevant partners across campus. Utilize an environmental cultural-change-focused approach in the design, development, and implementation of these culturally sensitive strategies.

Alcohol Prevention and Promotion of Individual and Community Health 65%
-Support and facilitate networks across campus to support strategies for the prevention of high risk drinking, alcohol related harms and other strategies to promote a healthy campus community. Participate and contribute as an active member of campus alcohol prevention initiatives, task forces and coalitions. Establish and promote efforts to foster tobacco or other drug use prevention.
-Convene and facilitate meetings of invested campus and community stakeholders. Manage projects and timelines. Monitor stakeholder engagement to ensure progression of work toward goals. Serve in a liaison role to campus partners in housing, student life, and others.
-Develop effective outreach programs to foster collaboration between UHS Prevention staff with students, faculty and staff, campus and community groups. Teach students the dynamics of community health and the complex array of factors that contribute to achieving individual and community health.
-Collaborate with UHS health care providers and internal workgroups to facilitate an integrated approach to alcohol prevention that includes screening, brief intervention, clinical preventive services and primary prevention.
-Work with UHS colleagues, communications professionals, prevention specialists, clinicians and campus partners to design and implement strategic responses to other emerging trends and issues that affect the health of UW-Madison students and campus community.
-Consult regularly with other members of the Campus Community Partnerships Team at UHS to identify and address emerging trends relevant to their specialty areas, including community building, violence prevention, and civic engagement.

Campus Representation and Communication 15%
-Participate in and represent UHS and UW in alcohol, other drug and tobacco prevention efforts in the community outside campus and on a statewide level.
-Develop and deliver presentations and reports to funders, students and community stakeholders, and assist with the development of health communication strategies and messages, including through the use of social media.

Program Evaluation 15%
-Research available evidence and support the use of evidence based strategies in alcohol and other harm reduction. Develop effective evaluation strategies.
-Link and align alcohol prevention efforts with other UHS and CCP prevention efforts, and assist with the development of evaluation measures.

Grant Activities 5%
-Participate in seeking grant and other revenue sources to support high risk drinking and other prevention initiatives.

Additional Information:

Must be able to work some evenings and weekends.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.

A period of evaluation will be required
