Dear colleagues;
In response to two posts I'd like to add the following:
1. Why is there so much attention on this list to the gang rape of women in
India and nothing about the drugging gang rape of a 16 year-old girl in
Steubenville, Ohio? The Ohio case is particularly relevant to this list
because the men involved were high school football players, one of whom has
moved on to college football at OSU. The story of rape drugs and athletes is
so prevalent in higher ed, I would expect more attention to Ohio than
India...or at least to have both stories discussed in the same space.
2. Addressing the needs of accused students under Title IX requires no
special energy because all schools already have protocols in place to deal
with students accused of racial and other forms of harassment and
discrimination. Whatever works to protect the rights of students accused of
racist and other targeted harassment under Title VI and Title IV should apply
to protect the rights of students accused of violating Title IX.
