The Women’s Resources Center is responsible for improving the campus climate for women and developing and implementing programs that address women's issues and gender-related concerns.  The Women’s Resources Center provides educational, cultural, socio-political, recreational and social programs which lead to greater equity, retention, advancement and empowerment of women students.  Programs and services address the unique needs of women students on campus. The Women’s Center works with individuals and groups to identify personal, social, economic and political issues which adversely affect women and offers support through counseling, advocacy, education, financial awards and social action.  The Women’s Resources Center is positioned to increase programs and activities to enhance the experiences of women students at the University of Illinois.

The successful candidate will be working on a campus with academically talented and diverse student population, including 19 percent international students, 12 percent Asian American students, 5 percent African American students, and 6 percent Hispanic/Latino students from a total enrollment over 42,000 students.  The campus is located Champaign-Urbana (total population 105,000) in east-central Illinois, 140 miles south of Chicago.  For additional information, see http://wrc.illinois.edu.

 

NATURE OF THE POSITION: 

The Assistant Director will be responsible for sexual assault education programs, initiatives and activities and is a full-time, academic professional staff position with the Women’s Resources Center, a programming unit of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations.  The primary responsibility of the position is to coordinate campus sexual assault awareness, education and prevention programs including the First Year CARE (Campus Acquaintance Rape Education) program and activities and events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Assistant Director reports to the Director, Women’s Resources Center.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate student peer educators.

Help train, supervise and coordinate student staff and volunteers as it relates to sexual assault educational programming and other center operations.

Coordinate the First Year CARE (Campus Acquaintance Rape Education) program including implementing, scheduling and assessing workshops for new, entering students and transfer students.

Develop, coordinate and evaluate peer education programs that address issues related to sexual assault on campus.

Assist with the writing and management of grants for awareness and education programs.

Develop campus-wide educational initiatives to sensitize the university community about issues related to sexual victimization.

Assist in the preparation of budget, progress reports and operating procedures, and ongoing evaluation of programs and activities.

Serve as a liaison to campus and community units that provide educational services related to sexual assault.

Assist with education and training activities for staff, faculty and para-professionals on sexual assault/abuse issues.

Assist with development of educational materials (electronic, print and video) related to sexual violence, including materials for the WRC lending library.

Work with campus and community units/agencies to plan and coordinate events and activities related to Sexual Assault Awareness Month and assist with other WRC awareness month related events.

Provide consultation and institutional advocacy in identifying gaps in service and work with appropriate administrators, faculty, staff and students to address these needs.

Assist other staff with publicizing the services, programs and events of the Women’s Resources Center through written and electronic means.

Assist in providing information, advocacy, referral and other direct services to students seeking assistance at the women’s center.

As appropriate, assist with the provision of referral, support and advocacy services to survivors of sexual assault/abuse and their significant others.

Perform other duties as required by the Women’s Resources Center and the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Relations related to a collaborative and collegial working environment.

In the absence of the Director, the Assistant Director will assume responsibility and provide management for the operation of the Women’s Resources Center.

Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

1.      Master’s degree in social work, education, counseling or related field is required. 

2.      A minimum of two years professional experience in providing educational programs to college student population which addresses sexual victimization is necessary.

3.      Demonstrated knowledge of interpersonal violence issues related to college student community and other related women’s issues with ability to apply concepts, techniques and practices to carry out program objectives.

4.      Demonstrated commitment to social activism around issues affecting women and all forms of social oppression is required.

5.      Demonstrated ability to do needs assessment and program evaluation.

6.      Excellent skills in communication and computers are necessary.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.                  Ability to understand and articulate gender-related needs and concerns from a perspective that includes the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other significant aspects of individual and cultural identity.

2.                  Experience in supporting, counseling and/or advocating on behalf of/with victims/survivors of sexual violence.

3.                  Knowledge and experience working with graphic and web-based programs such as Dream Weaver and PowerPoint.

4.                  Experience supervising students/entry-level staff.

APPOINTMENT TYPE:
This is a full time, twelve month, 100% academic professional appointment. Salary commensurate with experience.  The tentative start date for this position is January 16, 2013 or sooner.
