Hello all:

Great to hear that people remember me.  I’d like to take responsibility for the stat but it is in:

Berkowitz, A. D. (Ed.) (1994).  Men and rape: Theory, research, and prevention programs in higher education.  San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

Two of my studies in which we demonstrated that college men grossly overestimate other men’s comfort with sexist behaviors:

Kilmartin, C. T., Conway, A., Friedberg, A., McQuoid, T., Tschan, T., & Norbet, T. (1999, April).  Using the social norms model to encourage male college students to challenge rape-supportive attitudes in male peers.  Paper presented at the Virginia Psychological Association Spring Conference, Virginia Beach, VA.

Kilmartin, C., Smith, T., Green, A., Kuchler, M., Heinzen, H., & Kolar, D. (2008). A real time social norms intervention to reduce male sexism.  Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, 59, 264-273.

And a forthcoming paper in which we demonstrated a reduction in sexism through a cognitive dissonance activity in which men role-played confronting a male peer who behaved in sexist ways:

Kilmartin, C. T., Semelsberger, R., Dye, S. & Boggs, E. (in press).  A Cognitive Dissonance Intervention to Reduce Sexism in College Men.  Journal of Social Issues.

Happy to talk about any of this with anyone who is interested.

Chris

I think we have a poster at my office with that stat that was made by RAINN.  RAINN posts a lot of stats on their website.  Perhaps they can provide the original source.
