hi emily...
here at CSU we created a campaign called "CTMO" which stands for Consent Turns Me On. the CTMO campaign was designed to get students talking about fun and sex-positive ways to ask for consent. we ran a student voice survey which asked students to share their favorite ways to ask for and give consent. we then selected the submissions, "are you down to get down?" and "I'm down if you're down!" as our slogans.
we use the CTMO campaign in lots of ways but some highlights include:
-CTMO poster campaign for the residence halls (i attached a jpeg of this year's poster)
-CTMO t-shirts. the front reads "How do YOU give or get consent" and the back contains a definition of the word consent. (i attached a jpeg)
-CTMO photo-booth: students have the opportunity to practice writing consent statements/questions on a dry erase board in exchange for a CTMO tshirt. (you can see examples on the CTMO blog)
-CTMO carnival: we host 2 carnivals during SAAM where we offer the CTMO photo-booth, food and games (including "consensual twister" where students have to ask before any part of their body touches someone else.)
-CTMO blog: (http://www.consentturnsmeon.blogspot.com/) we primarily use this blog during the month of april (to update students about SAAM) but have plans to expand its use throughout the year.
-CTMO "tips for preventing sexual assault while on spring break" full page advertisement in the student paper. (i attached a jpeg of the ad). tips included "dont have sex with someone unless they are fully awake, sober and have given consent" and "dont sexually assault anyone".
one quick note... you will notice that we have framed the campaign around "getting" and "giving" consent. we were intentional in including both elements as an attempt to empower students of all genders to say "yes" or "no" to sex regardless of the pressures that might be associated with certain identities. meaning, we did not want to replicate the stereotype that sex is something that women are trying to avoid and the myth that men always want it. so, we included "how do you give consent" as a way to allow space for women to feel good about saying "yes!" and for men to feel good about saying "no", should they choose to.
having said that, we are beginning to have some concerns that asking students to name how they "give" consent might be potentially victim blaming if someone misinterprets the campaigns as saying that sexual violence is tied to a victim giving "mixed signals". ug! so.... we have made the decision to only focus on asking for consent in the future. so all future CTMO materials will contain the phrase "how do YOU ask for consent?" rather than "how do YOU get or give consent?".
let me know if you have any questions!
