Hello Colleagues,
It has been a few weeks since our campus hosted Wendy Murphy, a contributor to this list, for her talk, "Rethinking Rape," in which she made the powerful case for using the language of autonomy and human rights in our battle against rape culture and the
sexual victimization of women. Her words could not be more important now, as mainstream media pushes once again the familiar myth that violence, violation, humiliation, and degradation aren't wrong; they are what women really want.
Check out the COVER story of Newsweek magazine (a DOUBLE issue, which
means it will be on news stands for TWO FULL WEEKS!)
Featuring a naked woman wearing only searing red lipstick
and a black satin blindfold, the headline reads, "The Fantasy Life of Working Women - Why SURRENDER is a Feminist Dream."
That's right...in an age when few
women leaders and newsmakers ever grace the cover of national magazines, we have a rare headline story about women, and it's about how what women really want is to be dominated (sexually, emotionally, physically) by arrogant, self-centered, mysoginist men
(I am not exaggerating).
CLICK
HERE for a smart rebuttal to this latest high-profile incarnation of the never-ending "S&M cycle of feminine
sophistry and showboating." We need more voices like these, and Wendy's. Everyone, let's speak up and speak out against this current attack on women, which wants the world to believe that women don't really value our own autonomy.
