If you are ever looking for books you should consider supporting feminist bookstores, such as People Called Women (www.peoplecalledwomen.com), Ohio's only feminist bookstore. There are few remaining and they are valuable resources in our communities. Best wishes, Sarah Balser

Hi Juliette,
I know you said you're looking for books specifically so I don't know how useful this will be (sorry in advance if it isn't!), but if you're also interested in activities and article readings to illustrate/practice SJ with young folks, the Southern Poverty Law Center puts out a journal called "Teaching Tolerance" and one of their more recent issues might be useful. The Spring 2011 edition covers topics like the human side of the immigration debate, combating anti-Muslim bias, improving diversity in STEM classes, teaching about human trafficking, unlearning the "R" word, media literacy, and attitude change with regards to gender dynamics and bullying. In the back of the issue is a list of go-to teaching tools, which includes preK through 12 reading selections on SJ issues (this might be the section that's most useful for your purposes).
Here's the pdf if you're interested: http://www.tolerance.org/sites/default/files/general/Teaching
_tolerance_39.pdf
Thanks for putting this out there, always interested to see what SJ readings/teachings pop up on the listserves!

The American Library Association publishes a number of lists of recommended books for young readers, broken down into age groups and topics. I think the list that sounds closest to what you've described is The Amelia Bloomer Book List (inspired by a picture book about a dozen years ago called "You forgot your skirt, Amelia Bloomer!). I'll try to enclose a link but it's a long one so in case it does not work, searching for ALA and Amelia Bloomer should get you here:

Hey all -
Our Women's Center is starting a Read and Feed program with the local community. This program is focused on teaching about social justice to children. Part of this will include bringing children's books addressing or modeling social justice, i.e. female leads, different family systems, and a variety of cultures/ethnicities, etc.
Can anyone recommend age appropriate books dealing with these SJ issues, and even specifically related to bystander interventions and/or violence prevention?
Thanks so much!
