Dear Colleagues,

The Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) Office at UC Irvine will be hosting We Step into the Light again this year, a project that provides an opportunity for survivors of sexual violence to heal through art. We are in need of survivors for this project. Please see below for the details and attached flyer. Can you help us spread the word to the students you work with? Thank you for your support!

A Call For Thrivers!

This winter quarter, the Campus Assault Resources and Education (CARE) Office is collaborating with student artists and survivors of sexual violence to bring the project, "We Step Into the Light,” to the UCI campus.

The CARE Office is dedicated to providing students with resources and education surrounding the issues of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence and stalking. Through our involvement with “We Step Into the Light,” our office is working to provide an opportunity of healing and empowerment to survivors through art.

"We Step Into the Light" is a project that was originally created by Dr. Desmonette Hazly. Her mission is for art to depict how survivors have grown from just "surviving" life to thriving in it. Though a survivor's personal experience makes up a part of who they are, they are not entirely defined by being a survivor. Like every other person, they are made up of dreams, passions, ambitions and beauty.

The CARE Office is working with volunteer artists and now, seeking thrivers who are interested in being a part of this project. In this project, each survivor will be paired with an artist. This pair will get to know each other through several interviews that focus on capturing and understanding the thriver. These conversations are then translated into the work that the artist creates. The goal of the artist’s work is to display the uniqueness and beauty of the thriver and who they are as human beings. The art will demonstrate their strength and beauty to others.

The final art pieces will be shown at an exhibit in the Student Center from February 21st through the 23rd, followed by an art opening at the Center for Living Peace on February 23rd at 5:30pm. The Center for Living Peace is located in the University Town Center (UTC) located on Campus Drive, across the street from the Barclay Theatre at 4139 Campus Drive  Irvine, CA 92612.

We would love to highlight your strength, resilience, and courage.

If you are a survivor of sexual violence and you are interested in participating in this project, please e-mail Carly Lanning, CARE Intern at

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
