Men’s Empowerment Coordinator

The Center for Court Innovation, a project of the Fund for the City of New York, is a unique public-private partnership that promotes new thinking about how courts and criminal justice agencies can aid victims, change the behavior of offenders, and strengthen communities. The Center creates demonstration projects that test new approaches to problems that have resisted conventional solutions. The Center’s problem-solving courts include the nation’s first community court (Midtown Community Court), as well as drug courts, domestic violence courts, youth courts, mental health courts, and others. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.

The Crown Heights Mediation Center is a unique neighborhood institution that works to improve community problem-solving, collaboration, and inter-group relations in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. One project of the Mediation Center, Save Our Streets Crown Heights (S.O.S.), is a community-based effort to end gun violence in the neighborhood. S.O.S. works closely with local organizations, neighborhood churches and pastors, community residents and the individuals most likely to commit a shooting. S.O.S. Crown Heights provides immediate intervention whenever a shooting occurs in the neighborhood, reaching out to the victim, friends, and family to ensure that a retaliatory shooting does not take place. S.O.S. Crown Heights works closely with neighborhood leaders and businesses to promote a visible and public message against gun violence. The goal is to end the spread of violence by encouraging local voices to articulate that shooting is an unacceptable behavior.

The Center/S.O.S. Crown Heights seeks a Men’s Empowerment Coordinator to help create better access to traditional victim service agencies and develop on-site victim programming for young men of color who are experiencing community violence (“hidden victims”). The role of the Coordinator will be to deliver services to young men of color who have experienced violent trauma. By combining supportive services with awareness-raising among existing victim service providers about the needs of this population, the Coordinator will be able to improve the response to these unrecognized victims. The Coordinator will also assist the S.O.S. Crown Heights program in creating best practices and a national model for violence interrupter projects and victim service providers working with these “hidden victims.”
