Moving Beyond the Mandates: Adjudicating Sexual Violence on Campus

February 9 & 10, 2012
At
Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY

Registration forms and additional information are now available at  http://www.buffalostate.edu/deanofstudents/x746.xml

The Moving Beyond Mandates Conference is an opportunity for professional development and exploratory dialogue on adjudicating sexual violence offered peer to peer at a low cost.  You can come for one day or both.

This conference is designed with a few goals in mind.  You will have the opportunity to learn from experts on formulating effective questions for interviews and hearings, understanding and interpreting victim reactions, as well as State and National Requirements; to learn how other  colleges are addressing these issues in innovative ways; and to network with our colleagues across New York State.

We encourage Judicial/Conduct Office staff members, Judicial/Conduct Board members, Student Affairs Administrators, Campus Police and Security Personnel, Advocates, and others who are involved in adjudicating sexual assaults and other forms of sexual misconduct on campus are encouraged to attend on the 9th.

The roundtable will be held on Thursday February 9, 2012.   The main focus will be on formulating intentional and effective questions for interviews and hearings.  The roundtable will also include sessions on state and national legal requirements, victim/survivor reactions, and consent.   Additionally participants will receive information on resources in your area and there will be opportunities to share what is happening on your campuses.

The presenters will be:

  • Brandi Sutherland, Crisis Services of Erie County
  • Joseph Storch, Andrea Stagg, and Nicole Ettlinger, SUNY Office of General Counsel
  • Stacy Malone and Colby Bruno, Victim Rights Law Center, Boston, MA

Also, please consider preparing a poster or table top exhibit to showcase your institution’s innovations, policy advancement, or points of pride.  Information on resources in your area will also be on exhibit.

The planning committee realized that we all need to do this kind of training every year and bringing a trainer in from out of town gets expensive.  In order to develop some local capacity to continue this type of training we will also be holding a Train-the-Trainer workshop on Friday February 10, 2012.  This workshop will focus on developing skills to plan and lead trainings and mock hearings that help our Judicial/Conduct Board members formulate questions that elicit the information needed to determine if your Code was violated.

Space is very limited for the Train-the Trainer workshop so we are encouraging people who have responsibility for planning and implementing hearing board trainings to attend in teams of two.  This will be an interactive workshop and participants will leave with specific plans to carry out at hearing board training.

The registration form can be downloaded from http://www.buffalostate.edu/deanofstudents/x746.xml
