I have argued for a long time that the VAWA is primarily an ineffective boondoggle that co-opts activists who might otherwise be making a real difference.

This is a short and simple explanation about why the VAWA is so utterly useless (not intended to be so by well-intentioned advocates, but inevitable given its design)

In Which a Little-Known Legal Brief Plows into Hallowed Terrain

Ever since the U.S. Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed in 1994, 
women's advocates have rallied again and again to assure that VAWA stays 
authorized and funded. The steady torrent of threats against the act from 
antagonist men's groups has left advocates with little inclination to question 
whether VAWA is truly delivering what's needed to end the violence and secure 
justice for women. But a little-disseminated legal brief we came across recently 
rips along the fault lines and suggests that giving VAWA a thorough critique may 
be one of the most important steps we should be taking to advance the struggle.

Crítica a la VAWA
Un memorial legal poco conocido hace 
surcos en terreno sagrado

Desde que la Ley sobre Violencia contra las Mujeres (VAWA, por sus siglas en 
inglés) fue aprobada en Estados Unidos en 1994, defensoras de las mujeres se han 
manifestado una y otra vez para asegurar que ésta continúe autorizada y 
financiada. El continuo torrente de amenazas contra la Ley por grupos de hombres 
antagonistas ha dejado a las defensoras con pocos deseos de cuestionar si la 
VAWA realmente está cumpliendo lo que se necesita para poner fin a la violencia 
y que las mujeres obtengan justicia. Pero un memorial legal poco difundido al 
que tuvimos acceso recientemente deja al descubierto las fallas de la VAWA e 
indica que hacer una crítica minuciosa de esta Ley podría ser una de las medidas 
más importantes que deberíamos tomar para avanzar en la lucha.
