Melinda,

It would be laudatory for violence prevention folks to be in coordinator roles, from an expertise perspective, but there are some practical limitations or at least considerations.  The Title IX Coordinator needs to have significant institutional authority, and it is rare for violence prevention folks (important as we are) to have the institutional clout needed to reshape athletics programs, overturn student conduct decisions, oversee investigations, remove a tenured faculty member, or impose training requirements.  Of course, I’d love it if the athletics program reported to the prevention folks, but Wade’s deputy coordinator approach might make more sense, where a VP has the title, but a violence prevention expert does all the heavy lifting.  Also, keep in mind that ED expects the Title IX and 504 Coordinators to be the same (in most cases), so there may be some disconnect between the disability services and prevention fields of expertise.

Hi All,
I was wondering who on your campuses have been designated the Title IX coordinator?  Have any Violence Prevention staff taken this role?
Thanks for you help.
Melinda
