Job Title
Assistant Director Gender Relations Center
Job Description
The Assistant Director for Educational Initiatives participates in the work of the three-pronged vision for the office - including educational initiatives, outreach services and pastoral care - by spearheading all educational initiatives for the office; by recruiting, training and managing peer educators who serve to advance this vision; and by collaborating with other staff members to conduct outreach and pastoral care concerning rape and sexual assault services on campus. Ultimately, this position promotes the moral formation of college students consistent with Catholic identity, mission and values.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES - Spearheads educational initiatives for the office in the following ways:
- Designs all signature events for the Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI), including: mandatory program for all first-year students (College HAS Issues: Hookups, Alcohol and Sexual Assault); Active Bystander Training; SPAR (Student Preventing Acquaintance Rape); Fine Arts Workshop; Sexual Assault Awareness Week; Writing Workshop; and Festival on the Quad
- Assists AD for Outreach Services with the layout/editing of the VPI Literary Journal
- Organizes campus Clothesline Project and Take Back the Night
- Develops and presents training workshops on rape and sexual assault prevention and response for faculty, staff and students as requested
- Collaborates with AD for Outreach Services to design campus-wide programs; residence hall programs; collaborative co-sponsored programming; awareness week events; orientations; trainings; resource fairs; physical education wellness classes; and conferences presentations
- Collaborates with campus clubs and organizations for awareness week events
- Serves as a liaison to other Catholic colleges/universities, peer institutions and local nonprofits
- Attends regional and national trainings and conferences as applicable
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT - Recruits, trains and manages approximately 30 peer educators (called FIRE Starters) who help to design and implement educational initiatives.
OUTREACH SERVICES - Conducts outreach concerning rape and sexual assault services, including:
- Offers support/information to students who are survivors of rape/sexual assault
- Provides hospital accompaniment for student survivors during office hours
- Makes referrals to campus/local resources
- Consults with faculty, staff, students and parents about trauma and healing
- Networks with Belles Against Violence Office at St. Mary's College
- Identifies male faculty, staff and students to strengthen their involvement on campus, particularly with Men Against Violence (MAV)
- Participates in University committees concerning rape and sexual assault
PASTORAL CARE - Serves as a pastoral presence on campus though the following:
- Oversees Out of the Shadows support group for female survivors of rape/sexual assault
- Serves on retreat team as needed, particularly if audience includes survivors
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, ideally in Theology, Psychology, Sociology or related field.
- 3+ years experience in ministry or administration required, ideally in Catholic higher education or non-profit agency
- Awareness of/sensitivity to Catholic character, mission and values as it relates to issues of relationships, gender and sexuality
- Specialized training and experience with violence prevention, particularly rape and sexual assault
- Demonstrated ability to plan and implement programs for college students
- Experience working with both male and female populations of college students
- Ability to work collaboratively in higher education with faculty, staff and students
- Supervisory experience, particularly training and coordinating volunteers
- Strong organizational skills, with a demonstrated attention to detail
- Effective interpersonal skills, including a willingness to create a welcoming environment for all people
- Competent with technology (MS Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint; Illustrator; Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree preferred, ideally in Theology/Ministry or Education.
Minor or undergraduate/graduate certificate in Gender Studies preferred.
