Position Description
The CSDC at James Madison University is currently seeking a Post-Doctoral Resident for a 12-month position (August 2011 – August 2012). The intent of the residency is to provide an entry-level professional with the type of supervised experience necessary for licensure as a psychologist. The Resident will provide (1) short-term individual, group, and crisis counseling, (2) consultation services and outreach programming, and (3) supervision and training for graduate students. The Resident will also participate in organizational and clinical staff meetings and other university-wide meetings as appropriate. Further, the Resident may gain additional experience in areas such as administrative leadership, eating disorders, group counseling, psychoeducational outreach, and sexual assault counseling and response.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must have:

- Completed all requirements for their doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology from an APA-approved graduate program prior to the start of residency;

- Completed an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship, preferably in a university counseling center;

- Well-developed skills in providing brief psychotherapy for a student population.

Desired Qualifications
Previous training and experience in a college or university counseling center desirable. Preferred qualities of the candidate include: (1) demonstrated interest in and commitment to university counseling center work and college student development, (2) a collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect, and trust towards colleagues, (3) the energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of a challenging caseload while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships, (4) a self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals, (5) an appreciation for and experience with working with students of color, international students, and issues pertinent to these populations, and (6) excellent oral and written communication skills.

In addition to our APA-Accredited Pre-Doctoral Internship Program, the CSDC staff also trains master’s level externs, practicum students from the JMU’s doctoral and community counseling programs, and post-doctoral and psychiatry residents. accredited by the International Association of Counseling Centers and resides in the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of the Division is to “prepare students to be educated and enlightened citizens,” and individual departments strive to provide the best possible programs
