Hi Matt:

At UC Irvine we have created a new program called the Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (VIP) and it is designed specifically for the Greek community. Each Greek chapter is required to elect one VIP Chair who will serve as the point person and liaison to the CARE office for issues related to sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking. The concept behind the program is that Greek chapter members may feel more comfortable discussing these types of issues with a sister or brother who can then get them connected to our office or other campus/community resources. The VIP Chairs are also required to host 2 CARE workshops or create their own program per year.

The VIP Chairs go through a full day retreat/training and have one training each month on various topics (responding to sexual violence on campus, bystander intervention/Greek values, drugs and alcohol and SA, etc.). There are two student coordinators who work with me on the development of the program and general communication with the VIP Chairs. I have attached the initial call we put out to chapter members explaining our program. I know it is not exactly new member education, but has still been very successful in reaching the Greek community (a very high risk population on campus). If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to e-mail me or the coordinators at:

Best of luck!

Hello everybody,

My name is Matt Ennis and I am a junior at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  I am doing an internship this semester with my mentor, Michelle Issadore, and was hoping to get your input, advice, and some of your best practices regarding sexual assault prevention training in Greek New Member Education programs.  We have a sexual violence prevention peer education group on campus, Break the Silence, and were hoping to create a specific program designed for new members of Greek organizations as we have a huge Greek population.  I was hoping to hear of some strategies that have worked on your campuses or that have not worked but really anything you have to offer would be of great assistance and I cannot thank you enough for your help!

Sincerely,
Matt Ennis
