Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred. Preference will be given to those with a degree in higher education, college student personnel, or a helping (counseling, teaching, medical, etc.) profession.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Master's degree plus 4 yrs applicable professional experience. Bachelor's degree plus 5 years applicable professional experience. Applicable work experience includes a professional background in a helping (counseling, teaching, medical, etc.) or educational setting. Preference given to those with experience working with LGBTQ students in a higher education environment.
Principal duties:
Campus Wide Leadership of LGBT Education
Provide campus leadership on general issues and advocate for the full inclusion of LGBT students in all aspects of campus life
Serve as department spokesperson to internal and external constituencies
Create topical and annual reports on progress for campus leaders
Represent department on campus, state, regional and national committees
Develop partnerships with University staff and faculty to educate the campus on the social justice issues LGBT students confront on a daily basis and the contribution these individuals make to a diverse campus community
Collaborate with other campus partners to assure inclusion of LGBT students in the broader aspects of student life (e.g. LGBT Faculty Senate Committee, LGBT Studies Certificate Committee, GLBT Alumni Council, Housing, Division of Student Life)
Connect students with Madison community cultural programs, events, and resources
Maintain contact with peer centers across the country
Increase faculty, staff, student, alumni and community involvement with the Center
Serve as a liaison and resource for community agencies such as Outreach, the Madison Community LGBT Center
Budget and Personnel Administration
Overall recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of one assistant director and various student staff members
Oversee planning, analysis and expenditures for annual budget of approximately $185,000 in state funding
Advocate for and manage financial, physical and human resources
Maintain contracts with an assortment of contract service providers
Remain abreast of University budget and personnel policies and train/inform department staff as needed
Administer LGBT campus-wide diversity event grant funds
Administer or co-partner on grant writing activities
Be accountable for any grant funding awarded to the department
Research and Scholarship
In partnership with faculty, conduct and/or facilitate research on LGBT identity development in a college environment
Present research findings, best practices, and otherwise contribute to the field of sexual identity education at local and national meetings, conferences and training venues
Submit findings in scholarly journals, technical training manuals and monographs
Oversee and direct departmental assessment plan
Oversight of LGBT Campus Center Programs & Services
Provide vision, leadership and long-term strategic planning for the following programmatic areas:
Event programming
Leadership Development
First Year Experience program
Speaker's Bureau
Mentor Program
Discussion Groups
Library Services
Conceptualize an array of programs and events that will facilitate LGBT identity development, dialogue and understanding
Assist students in developing programs that contribute to the enrichment of the university community
Support affiliated student organizations
Promote and advocate for department functions and LGBT students
Develop and integrate LGBT CC goals with Essential Learning Outcomes
Division of Student Life Responsibilities
Assist in advancing the mission, vision and strategic priorities of the Division of Student Life
Demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive living-learning-working community
Develop short term and long term fundraising efforts for the LGBT CC and the Division of Student Life
Represent LGBT CC on divisional committees
Actively participate in leading the division through work groups, committees and the Division Leadership Team
Represent the Division on campus committees, initiatives and events as requested
Represent the dean of Students as requested
Other duties as assigned
Additional Information:
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Campus Center (LGBT CC) at UW-Madison leads the campus in providing a complex variety of support services to enrolled LGBT UW students and their allies. The Center's work is guided by University of Wisconsin System, UW-Madison and the Division of Student Life's strategic priorities. The director is responsible for providing vision, direction and oversight to the Center's priorities and functions. The position reports to an Associate Dean in the Division of Student Life.
