I second the Irene’s suggestion of The Gender Knot and also like his Privilege, Power, and Difference for bringing in heterosexism, racism, ableism, capitalism,
and a more intersectional approach. My students also respond really well to Jackson Katz’s The Macho Paradox.
The first chapter of Judith Lorber’s Paradoxes of Gender (“Night to His Day: The Social Construction of Gender”) is also a good short chapter questioning gender
and power. Some available edited collections are Men’s Lives (which I have read and recommend) and Men Speak Out (edited by Shira Tarrant) and College Men and Masculinities
(edited by Shaun Harper and Frank Harris). I haven’t read much from the latter two, but I they’re more current than Men’s Lives (which is in its 8th edition).
I have found that my students do not respond well to Michael Kimmel’s Guyland. I’m not saying I don’t think it’s a good book, but rather that male students
have said it doesn’t speak to their experience (and that’s not just coming from straight white male students).
Hope that helps a bit, -bob ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Robert Pleasants, Ph.D. CB# 7470 James A. Taylor Bldg. I recommend Allan Johnson's book "the gender knot". It does a great job of describing patriarchy as a cultural legacy that is men's responsibility to undo Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry From: Zahabiyah Khorakiwala <> Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2010 09:50:42 -0800 To: <> Subject: recommended readings for men Hi All: I am putting together readings for our male peer educator group: “Challenging All Men to Prevent Sexism.” Do you have any recommended articles or texts that I should consider
in outreaching to men who are committed to speaking out against sexual violence? I am hoping to identify engaging readings that highlight why this is a men’s issue as well. Please let me know, thank you!
