Very sad news indeed.
I was a little taken aback by how that report was written, especially the
first sentence: " A 19-year-old woman found slain in a men's bathroom at San
Diego City College appeared to be the victim of domestic violence ,
school officials said, dispelling fears that a random killer had come to
campus."
It's as if this is news that provides great relief since the perpetrator
"only" committed an act of domestic violence, as opposed to a random slaying.
This idea touches on the thinking that it's comforting that this incidence
occurred in the context of some type of relationship and wasn't random,
because people can conjecture that maybe she "did something" to provoke it.
In other words, the idea of a "random killer" paints a narrative of innocents
being killed without reason, in contrast to this woman who is somehow less
innocent and may have had a part in what happened to her, simply by being in
some sort of relationship with her attacker.
I wish the coverage on this had emphasized DV as a problem requiring
attention rather than a familiar occurrence the general public has somehow
come to complacently accept.
