Hi Catherine,
Believe it or not, we did a training for some of the Athletics student
affairs folks 2 weeks before Yeardley was murdered. They still can't get
over the timing. Sadly, neither lacrosse coach was there (although the
Associate AD is the former coach). But most of the training was to support
survivors, v identifying perpetrators. But we do go over all the danger
signs in the training, and participants hear from survivors who are willing
to speak publicly (the total training is about 2-1/2 hours). We were in the
process of figuring out when to do another training when the disaster
happened. Now that we have a new president who is strongly committed to
dealing with these issues, the Athletics Dept, Student Affairs, (and
hopefully SDVS at some point) will do a training somewhat like "Step Up" for
all faculty, including athletics, but modified to fit the role of
advisor/faculty/coach, etc. [Susie Bruce, our director of Alcohol & Substance
Ed, was one of the authors of Step Up and it's used for athletes, but we
didn't use the sexual assault/IPV stuff because we thought it needed
improvement.] You might want to speak with Jane Miller, AD of Athletics, to
find out what's cooking. At the present moment, everyone is frantically
working on organizing our Day of Dialogue, which is a week from this Friday,
so you might not get much of an answer right away.
Those SAPC list members who are interested in our Day of Dialogue, I'll be
happy to post information on the process and what we did, along with my
impressions of success, etc., after it's done. It's only the first step in a
year-long discussion of violence and oppression on campus. It was initiated
by Terry Sullivan, our new president.
Take care,
Claire

Subject: training for coaches
Hi all,
I've been asked by athletics on campus to do an hour-long training with the
coaches focused on helping them identify students of concern and the best way
to intervene. This request is in reaction to Yeardly Love and wanting to
help coaches recognize red flags and intervene early. Seems like they are
wanting something interactive (similar to the Step Up curriculum). I'm
wondering whether anyone has done anything like that and if so, whether
they'd be willing to share with me their curriculum. I'm not too familiar
with sports culture and want to be thoughtful about preparing something that
will speak to them and be helpful.
Any help, much appreciated.
Cathy
