Superbad |
Consent & Sexual assault |
One of my favorite moments is in Superbad, when the Michael Cera character negotiates the come-on from the girl he really likes, who is so drunk she vomits in the room seconds after proposing to give him “the best blow j ever”. For students who find social norms acceptable and/or hilarious, it works really well to demonstrate the fluidity of consent (rather than a “yes” given is ongoing) and the absurdity of attributing consent once people have been drinking. In the language of our field: the scene reverses gender roles and elevates the appropriate use of restraint and consent in situations of extreme intoxication. |

40-Year Old Virgin |
Bystander Intervention, Rape culture, sexism, sexual assault |
I used to used the first club scene in 40 Year Old Virgin. The character Jay "teaches" Andy how to pick up "drunk chicks." He tells Andy to look for the drunkest women in the club. He tells Andy to look for women who are so drunk they have bruised knees, broken heels, vomit in their hair.
A direct quotes from the scene is: Jay: [to Andy, in a bar] All you got to do is use your instincts. How do you think a lion knows to tackle a gazelle? It's written, it's a code written in his DNA, says, "Tackle the gazelle." And believe it or not, in every man there's a code written that says, "Tackle drunk bitches."

Hancock |
Minimization of consent |
I love, love, love “Hancock.” Just love the whole concept of a superhero who’s an alcoholic jerk for a change. But the scene where he asks “do I have permission to touch your body” kind of makes the audience laugh in a whole “look, he’s so hyper-PC sensitive he’s not even rescuing her” way. To me, anyway. |

Superbad |
Consent |
While in Superbad there are many
scenes that give us reason to cringe(!) there is one scene near the end where
one of the main characters is intoxicated and wants to have sex with the girl
hosting the party (who has not been drinking). She acknowledges to him
that she's interested in having sex with him, but will only do so when they
are both sober (quite the opposite to the the other scene mentioned in the
list). |

Consent |
(not a reference to intimacy, but rather crossing boundaries) During a shoot out scene, Hancock asks an officer he intends to carry out of the crossfire, "Do I have permission to touch your body?" http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/article/do_i_have_permission_to_touch_your_body

Superbad |
Consent & Sexual Assault |
The main story line is about a quest to obtain alcohol and get a girl so drunk that she's not able to sexually refuse (ie. assault). Also, one of the boys arrives at the party and finds the girl he is interested in drunk. The folks at the party tell him that if he gets drunk too it will be okay. |

Observe and Report |
Consent & Sexual Assault |
The film portrays a scene where Ana Ferris is puking one minute, yelling at Seth Rogen's character to continue having "sex" with her, and then she's passed out the next minute.
