Hello Colleagues,

Within our Division of Student Life throughout the past year, each department has had a program review, conducted by experienced colleagues from peer institutions and/or who are leaders in the field identified through professional organizations.  This coming fall it will be my office's turn.  Our office is a student wellness program, focussed on health education.  However, I think we are somewhat unique, so the task of determining who to invite to conduct the review is a little less straightforward than it would be for other units like Career Services, Counseling, Residence Life.

At this point we would like to assemble a group of 3 reviewers:  1 person who comes from a college wellness program that offers health education AND that utilizes student peer educators to carry out their work; 1 person who is an expert in Substance Abuse Counseling and Education; and 1 person who is an expert in providing crisis services for victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence & stalking AND prevention/education on these topics.

As we identify colleagues in these fields who could serve as program reviewers, I am turning to this listserv and I appreciate any feedback you can provide.  I am specifically hoping to connect with colleagues who work in a similar setting and offer similar services to mine.  Please share if you have helpful answers to these questions:

1.  Can you recommend someone who could serve on our review board, specifically to be the person to review our sexual assault, intimate partner violence & stalking services?
2.  I have described our staff below.  Does anyone have a staff that is similar?  Anyone work in a college wellness/health education program?  If so, how is your staff comprised?
3.  Are the crisis counseling, victim advocacy, crisis intervention, or educational services that you offer provided by trained student volunteers?  Professional staff only?  Some combination?
4.  If so, what type of office do you work from?  (student health, counseling center, wellness program, etc.?)

We have 5 full-time professional staff, a Secretary, a Graduate Assistant, and typically 1 to 2 student interns.  The 5 full-time staff include:

  • 2 Substance Abuse Counselors who conduct alcohol & substance abuse assessments & counseling
  • 1 Program Coordinator who offers Alcohol/Substance Abuse Outreach Education
  • 1 Program Coordinator (me) who coordinates our crisis intervention services for victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence & stalking, and works with our student peer educators who provide safer sex & sexuality programs on campus
  • Our Director, who coordinates our peer education group, works closely with the peer educators who do programs on body image, disordered eating, nutrition, fitness & stress management.  Obviously a lot of her time is spent in administrative Director duties, and she also coordinates any grants or grant applications we attempt.
Thank you so much for any input you can provide!
Angela
