Hello Colleagues,
Our SART here at Old Dominion University is working on revising and
coordinating our sexual assault protocol. A couple of questions have come up
that I am hoping members of the listserv can help answer.
We are trying to make the confidentiality levels of our sexual assault
support services more transparent to increase reporting among our students.
My position as Sexual Assault Free Environment Coordinator is currently
ranked in the moderate level of confidentiality. I would like to know what
level of confidentiality other campuses use for equivalent positions that are
not held by licensed counselors. Based on what I have read so far, my
position should be moved to the highest level of confidentiality. However, I
would really like to hear from colleagues as to what they are doing and how
it impacts their victim services.
My second question concerns campus victim rights. The model protocol we are
using to guide our revision includes a section of campus victim's rights that
should be clearly explained to the student. Our Assistant Dean of Students
had some concerns about calling these items "rights" and what the legal
implications might be for us as an institution if we do. Ultimately, I will
need to let our legal counsel review this. Before I do, however, I want to be
equipped with additional information to support including "rights" in the
protocol. Do other campuses use campus victim rights in their sexual assault
information/protocol/literature? If so, did any top administrators give you
a problem implementing it?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Joann
