Dear Colleagues,
I thank everyone for the information they gave on Take Back the Night. I do
however, have one more request: Can you send me the schedule you use for
your Take Back the Night (The time allotted to speaking, testimonials,
education, etc, and the order they come in) or a pamphlet you hand out?
Thank you all so much.

Hey all -
We unfortunately just had one of our students arrested for various counts of
downloading child pornography. While he could be sanctioned in our office of
student conduct under pther codes, we do not have one specifically for child
pornography and I was wondering if anyone out there did and what your
thoughts are about having one.
Thank you!

Many institutions will have conduct codes that include a standard of conduct
that will be to the effect of "violations of local, state, or federal law,"
in part so that if a student violates a law that is not otherwise included
in a student code of conduct, they can be held accountable by the
institution. That would likely be a good move to help the institution for
this sort of behavior.

Dear Juliette,
At Randolph-Macon, we could approach this probelm several ways. We have a
"Misuse of Communications Device" violation, which we created in January
because of a rise in illegal downloads and uploads, but it also covers
harassing text messages, E-mails, and Facebook posts. It reads as follows:
"17. Misuse of a Communications Device ? Use of a communication device
(telephone, computer, emergency call box, computer network, and any software
which can be used therein, etc) to commit acts prohibited by federal, state
or local laws or regulations, or the Code of Student Conduct or college
policy, or which is used to disrupt the normal operations of the college or
harass another member of the R-MC community, or which violates the
?Unacceptable use of resources? policy found in the R-MC Computer Resources
Policies in Fishtales. Included in this provision are violations of the
Copyright Act (1976); the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (2000) or the No
Electronic Theft Act (1997).
a. A first violation carries a minimum sanction of $100 fine and five (5)
College service hours, as well as denial of access to the Campus network
until their computer is examined by ITS.
b. A second violation carries a minimum sanction of $200 fine and ten (10)
College service hours, as well as denial of access to the Campus network
until their computer is examined by ITS, and an educational task.
c. A third violation carries a minimum sanction of $300 fine, twenty (20)
College service hours and may result in denial of access to the Campus
network for one semester."
We could also charge them with an "Unlawful Behavior" violation, which
reads:
"29. Unlawful behavior- Any behavior that violates federal, state or local
law, regardless of whether it has been adjudicated by civil authorities or
not. Open Sanctions "
Given your experience, I might add a clause about Child Pornography and
"Extreme" Pornography to our Code, but I never thought it would be a problem
here. Hope this helps!

As many of you know, April is National Sexual Violence Prevention Month.
I've printed two new bumper stickers that raise awareness about sexual
violence and sexual coercion in particular. You can have two stickers for
free (one of each or two of one) - if you need more, they're $1 each plus
shipping.
The stickers have a teal background with white lettering. I use an equal
sign with a line through it to mean "does not equal." So one of them says
"No (does not equal) Try Harder" and the other says "No (does not equal) Get
Me Drunk." Both then say "Stop Sexual Violence and Coercion." To see
pictures of the stickers, go to http://www.voicesofmen.org/merchandise.html.
One person per college or per agency gets the two free stickers! So please
write me with your address and I'll send them to you. I've also had a
couple of cancellations for April, so if you'd like to book "Voices of Men"
in your community, I'd love to talk about that as well. Thanks! :-)
Until the violence stops, Ben.
