Colleagues,
I advise caution when completing surveys distributed over list serves by for
profit companies, especially when they do not indicate that they are approved
by human subjects research committees. Though I do not know the intentions
of the last one we received, the stated purpose of such surveys is not always
the actual purpose. In this case the stated purpose appears to be to appeal
to our need to save on costs on campuses. What information that is collected
can be used for is to devise marketing strategies to figure out how much to
charge institutions for an online sexual assault curriculum. Just a reminder
that not all surveys that go out are for the purposes of collecting data to
understand the phenomena we are all trying to fight (sexual assault) and that
some research is done to figure out how to maximize profits.
