Hello, SAPC friends!
Like many of you, I'm trying to stop sexual violence and change "rape
culture" - in particular, the notion that when a woman says "no" to sex or
anything else, we men think we can just keep trying until they say "yes."
Towards this end, I've printed a bumper sticker against sexual coercion - it
might be useful for your Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities this
April.
The bumper sticker says "Silence (Does Not Equal) Consent" - really, it says
"Silence = Consent" with a line through the equal sign. Underneath in
smaller letters it says "Stop Sexual Violence And Coercion." The letters
are white and the background is teal, the color for Sexual Assault
Awareness.
Each agency or individual can have up to three for free! I will also pay
for the shipping and handling. Any more than three are $1 apiece. If you
want some, please do not write to me - write instead to my niece and
manager, Laura Atherton:
(she is copied on this email,
so if you hit "reply all" it'll go to her).
I know many of you received the free Valentine's Day "Equality Cards" - I
would love to know if they were useful to you and your work to stop
violence. Take care, and have a great week!
Until the violence stops, Ben.

"Is the content of The Vagina Monologues appropriate for high school
students? No. Absolutely not. Teenagers should not be dealing with issues of
rape, domestic violence and abuse. however.[we] already deal with these
[problems] on a daily basis. It is absolutely appropriate for women (and men)
to have a forum to deal with these issues in a safe and positive
environment." - from Rob Okun's column on www.VDay.org

Dear colleagues,
I am writing once again to let you know about the important work we
are doing at A LONG WALK HOME, INC. for 2009. A LONG WALK HOME is a
non profit organization that uses art therapy and the visual and
performance arts to document, to educate and to bring about social
change. Below you will find the schedule for our performances of
Story of A Rape Survivor (SOARS) for the year.
Considered one of the most innovative and entertaining programs of its
kind, SOARS documents Salamishah Tillet's personal journey of
surviving and healing from sexual violence by featuring a diverse cast
of women who use modern dance, spoken-word, music, and photography to
retell this universal story of triumph and hope. Due to growing
popularity, SOARS has been invited to a number of college campuses for
Black History, Women's History, and Sexual Assault Awareness Months
(February, March, and April respectively). See the schedule below for
specific tour dates, times and locations (we are always adding more
tour dates, so please check out website http://www.alongwalkhome.org,
or you can join the Facebook group SOARS to obtain regular updates.
Please circulate the information below widely and help us to impact
others through this captivating story of healing from sexual assault.
Also if you would like to support the movement in another way you can
participate in our fundraiser by purchasing a "Got Consent?" T-shirt
via our website. As always I want to thank you so much in advance for
your encouragement and for partnering in this important work!
In solidarity,
R?gine
