Hello, friends!

Apparently, Facebook has been removing photos of breastfeeding women from
women's profiles.  The removals are accompanied by warnings of account
termination.

A group has formed: Mother's International Lactation Campaign (MILC - they
should get our support simply for having a great acronym).  MILC is urging
Facebook members to replace their profile photo with a photo of a lactating
woman on December 27 - you can download such photos (as I have) from their
website: http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/event.php?eid=39521488436.

I remember a few years ago, when a woman was kicked out of the Mall of
America for breastfeeding in public.  As I recall, the next day there was a
"nurse-in," where hundreds of moms breastfed their infants at the mall - the
policy was changed that day.  I couldn't join THAT protest, but I can (and
will) join in this "virtual nurse-in."

Those of you near to Palo Alto - there will be an actual "nurse-in" outside
the offices of Facebook - 156 University Ave. at 11 AM.

Why should breastfeeding be considered obscene?  For most of us, it was our
first meal.

Until the violence stops, Ben.

Dear Colleagues,

The U.S. Department of Education is offering a new grant opportunity
(http://www.higheredcenter.org/grants/high-risk/fy09/ ;
<http://www.higheredcenter.org/grants/high-risk/fy09/> ), with applications
due Jan 30, 2009. Of particular interest to list members is the second
"absolute priority": Absolute Priority #2: Develop or Enhance, Implement, and
Evaluate Campus- and/or Community-Based Strategies to Prevent Violent
Behavior Among College Students (see p. 23 of the information/application
procedures.) Regarding the violent behavior that may be addressed by the
application, the FAQ (also posted on the site) states: "Absolute Priority #2
does not specify the type of violent behavior among college students that is
to be prevented. Forms of violent behavior that are of concern on college
campuses include rape and sexual assault; nonsexual physical assault, such as
fights, muggings, and hazing; and hate crimes. Applicants can use their own
discretion based on the needs of their campus community in determining what
specific forms of violent behavior will be addressed in their respective
proposals. "

Other key information:
-- The project period for this grant is up to 24 months.
-- Projects will be funded for approximately $100,000 to $150,000 per year
depending on the scope of work.
-- Eligibility: institutions of higher education (IHEs), consortia thereof,
public and private nonprofit organizations, including faith-based
organizations, and individuals.

Questions regarding the competition should be directed to the Department of
Education contact person listed at the bottom on the grant announcement page.

Please circulate widely.

Best Regards,
Linda Langford
