Hi Chris, 

Michigan State University Sexual Assault Program has a 24-hour hotline
that is staffed by student volunteers (and some staff/faculty
volunteers) who must complete the 36-hour Sexual Assault Crisis
Intervention (SACI) training. That is the name of student organization
(volunteers) who respond to the 24 hour hotline. They also provide
in-person crisis intervention and advocacy services at local hospitals
and police stations.  SACI is the student organization that is
affiliated with our program - our program is simply called the MSU
"Sexual Assault Program" 

All incoming calls are answered by a 24-hour answering service, the
caller is placed on hold while the answering service calls our SACI cell
phone.  We have two people on call answering the hotline: 1) the primary
volunteer carries the primary hotline cell phone; and 2) the back-up
paid staff member carries the back-up hotline cell phone.  If the
primary volunteer is on another call or misses the call for some reason,
then it is transferred to our back-up cell phone.  If that back-up staff
person on call does not answer for some reason, then it goes to our
program office phones during the day and to program staff cell phones at
night until the caller is connected with an advocate.

Hi all - At Colorado State University we have a 24-hour on-call system
for sexual assault survivors to speak with a peer advocate (called the
Victim Assistance Team). Currently, survivors call CSUPD dispatch and
give a name and number, and the advocate calls back. Even though this is
a separate process from reporting to the police, we have become
concerned that simply having the police answer the calls creates a
barrier to services (since many survivors may not want to have any
contact with the police at all).

We would appreciate if those if you who have 24-hour on-call advocacy
programs would be willing to share how you handle this on your campus.
Do the calls go to the advocate directly? Do you use pagers? Cell
phones? Some type of answering service?

Also, for anyone who has a peer advocacy service, what do you call your
group? We are also considering a name change because we have been
getting calls unrelated to sexual assault.

We'd appreciate any feedback  you can provide.
