FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DOJ OVAM DIRECTOR CINDY DYER TO DELIVER KEYNOTE AT NYC DVAM PANEL
Director of the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against
Women to Deliver Keynote at Oct. 20 Panel Hosted by a Group of Men Working
Internationally to End Domestic Violence
Washington, DC , Oct. 15 -- While a great deal of outreach during October's
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is directed towards women, one
organization hopes to end domestic abuse by doing the exact opposite -
directing awareness towards young men. Studies show the need to educate
young men early to prevent domestic violence; 69% of teens who had sex by
age 14 say they have experienced an abusive relationship.
Policy makers and violence prevention leaders will gather in New York City
next Monday, Oct. 20 for "Women and Men as Allies in Preventing Men's
Violence Against Women," a panel discussion hosted by international
gender-violence prevention leader, Men Can Stop Rape. It will be held at the
John Jay College of Criminal Justice, which is also co-hosting the event.
"Putting the burden solely on women - asking them to 'watch out' for abusive
men and other similar risk reduction tactics - is not going to end our
domestic violence problem," Stephen Glaude, President and CEO of Men Can
Stop Rape explains. "What our world needs - and what our organization and
this panel of policy leaders will find - are positive solutions that involve
women and men, especially young men, working together to end violence
against women."
Cindy Dyer, Director of the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Violence
Against Women will deliver the keynote. Featured panelists include Yolanda
B. Jimenez, Commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office to Combat
Domestic Violence; Harriet Lessel, Executive Director of the New York City
Alliance Against Sexual Assault; Dr. Katie Gentile, Director of John Jay's
Women's Center; Neil Irvin, Vice President of Programs at Men Can Stop Rape
(MCSR); and teen members from the Men of Strength (MOST) Club, MCSR's high
school primary violence prevention program in its second year in New York.
Named as one of the "world's most innovative domestic violence prevention
programs" in a recent competition sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation, Men Can Stop Rape has been engaging young men in preventing
gender-based violence for the last ten years. After setting up its youth
development program in every District of Columbia public high school last
fall, MCSR received funding from fashion designer Liz Claiborne Inc. to
expand its Men of Strength (MOST) Club into every New York City borough.
Currently in its second year, the "Strong Boroughs" campaign has established
ten MOST Club sites in high schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
With a total of 50 sites nationwide, Men Can Stop Rape has provided over
2,000 young men in DC, California, Maryland, New York, North Carolina,
Pennsylvania, and Ohio with a structured and supportive space to learn about
healthy masculinity and prevent violence against women.
