Dear Michelle,
We're also doing our RA trainings soon. I think that it's important for
them to know their office's protocol so they can tell the resident what is
going to happen with the disclosure. It's pretty traumatic to tell your RA
who you trust, only to later find out that they had to report it to the
police, their supervisor, or whomever. Knowing the protocol (and having it
spelled out) can only help them in the long run. Then they can tell the
student in advance (perhaps predicting a difficult disclosure) or afterwards
what they might have to do. Otherwise, I think the disclosre stuff is the
same as anywhere - surveying the safety of the individual, seeing if the
perpetrator is part of your system (and should there be any consequences to
him, like moving out or whatever), guiding the survivor to appropriate
resources (in this case, academic, as well as judicial, medical, and
support). Even though they've never had this training, I'd ask the returning
RA's if they have dealt with survivors as RA's, and how that went. Those are
my thoughts, not that you hadn't already come up with these. Good luck! It's
exciting that you're able to get into the school to do these trainings!
Peace,
Ross

Subject: Resident Advisor Training
Hi All,
I am going to be training the RA's at a Catholic University at the end of the
month on sexual assault. In the past, they have never had RA training on this
topic. In addition to the generalities (what is SA, myths, facts, common
reactions, resources, campus SA dynamics) I'm wondering if anyone has any
curriculum or tips on what to cover regarding how to respond if a resident
discloses?
Thanks!!
