An Anthology of Campus Rape Culture Narratives
Edited by Sara Carrigan Wooten
Since feminism began to reshape the ways that scholars think
about women's experiences and social research, the epidemic proportions
of college and university rape have been documented time and time again.
Notable feminist sociological and ethnographic studies have done much to
alter the national dialogue regarding this historically ignored
systematic site of abuse for young women and the ways that institutions
of higher education play a role in its perpetuation. These studies have
accomplished the crucial task of bringing to light the high incidence
rate of campus rape, but often fail to fully examine the lived
complexities of this social and educational phenomenon.
By allowing uncomplicated understandings of gender to
dominate the dialogue around campus rape, researchers and anti-rape
activists often ignore the ways that race, class, gender identity and
sexual orientation also factor into this complex and ongoing crisis.
The depth of literature on this topic is impressive however, the crucial
element of individual voices of those directly affected by sexual
violence have been interpreted by researchers and rarely given the space
to speak for themselves.
This anthology aims to complicate the conversation around
campus rape by exploring the experiences of women, men and transgender
survivors in their own words. By allowing the complexities of
individual experiences and identities to speak for themselves I hope to
deepen this ongoing conversation and make a space for contributors to
interrogate the ways that campus rape not only affects their lives but
the campus community as a whole. This acknowledgement of the
campus-wide effect of rape leads us to also seek narrative accounts from
students, staff, faculty and other community members who may not have
directly experienced sexual violence but have felt its impact on their
educational communities. Contributors are encouraged to explore the
ways that their race, class, gender identity and sexual orientation have
shaped their experiences of campus sexual violence.
