Hello, SAPC friends! I have a message from Victoria Bowen - you might
remember her as the young woman who was raped, and then was forbidden to use
the word "rape" in her Nebraska trial. Her story is compelling and I hope we
can all help her spread her message as she begins to speak publicly about
what happened to her.
Please write to her for more information, not me (unless you want to invite
both of us - we're beginning to do some work together). Thanks!
My name is Tory Bowen. In 2004, a senior in college at the University of
Nebraska - Lincoln, I was raped by a man who was arrested for rape twice
before.
You may remember my case from the media coverage - the judge banned the
words, 'rape, date rape drugs, sexual assault, defendant, sexual assault
nurse examiner, rape kit'... the list goes on. Now, the state of Nebraska had
to drop the case because the Judge banned too much evidence.
A man who has been arrested 3 different times for 3 different rapes, for 3
different women walks the streets free today. What is to stop him from victim
number 4? Certainly not the courts. I have not only been a victim of rape,
but a victim of the judicial system.
I am interested in speaking at Universities, Schools, Police Groups, Rape
Crisis Centers, etc., about my case. If you are interested, please contact me
at:
.
Speaking out is how I fight back.
Thank you,
Tory Bowen
Until the violence stops, Ben.

Quote of the Month, January 2008 (National Stalking Awareness Month)
"Empowerment, we are now asked to believe, is not about getting an education,
not about becoming economically independent, not about taking control of our
bodies, not about saving the environment, not about working toward social
justice, but dressing a certain way and wearing the newest version of what
ever t-shirt or body piecing we choose. Racism, sexism, and class privilege
are still alive and well.We have exchanged the possibility of genuine change
for feminism light and designer water."
