I know I'm coming late to this discussion but I wanted to add some
thoughts. We consistently offer a group each semester. I believe that
if it is something the campus comes to know as a resources that is
always there, you will have more success with members. That has meant
for us that sometimes a group has been three people and you have to
struggle through some semesters with low numbers but I feel that it has
been so important to those survivors that attend the group that it is an
essential resource to offer.
I had a group of five women that continued in a group together for a
couple of years. They moved on to more advanced topics and at some
point wanted to talk to classes/groups about their experiences. They
spoke as a panel several times on campus and this program in itself
boosted our numbers in the current group. So testimonials by past group
members had a big impact on survivors that were thinking about joining
the group. You could certainly incorporate some anonymous quotes in
your advertising that might help people consider the group.
So I typically have a group for new people and if that group wants to
continue the following semester, I continue that group and also start
another one for new group members.
