DUKE UNIVERSITY
Duke University was created in 1924, as James Buchanan Duke's memorial to his
father, Washington Duke. Since that time, the University has undergone great
physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as
East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. The newer
West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of
Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's
College of Duke until 1972, when the men and women's colleges merged. In
1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.
Today, Duke has a total of nine colleges and schools: Trinity College of Arts
and Sciences (1859); School of Law (1904); Divinity School (1926); Graduate
School (1926); School of Medicine (1930); School of Nursing (1931); Nicholas
School of the Environment and Earth Sciences (1938); Pratt School of
Engineering (1939); and Fuqua School of Business (1969). The University
enrolls over 13,000 students from all 50 states and 94 foreign countries.
Approximately half of Duke's students are enrolled in the undergraduate
Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.
Duke has a reputation for academic excellence that places the University in
the top 10 nationally. The campus is renowned for the beauty of its
architecture and its natural setting amidst the 7,900-acre Duke Forest.
Situated in close proximity to the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke is one of three
major universities in the Research Triangle area.
