Hey all -
I just got off of the phone with our student conduct person. He feels
that there is a gap in services on campus in that he would like to be
able to provide some form of educational opportunity(ies) for
perpetrators that come through his office, either for sexual harassment
or for sexual assault/rape and other forms of relationship violence. Of
course our office is not going to provide this service (and
unfortunately, I don't necessarily believe it will do anything), yet I
appreciate that he is wanting to try and do SOMETHING (as long as it is
in addition to suspension/expulsion, etc.). So, my question to you all
is, does your campus offer any type of educational component for perps
that present to student conduct? Preferably not as part of a sanction
but rather just a recommendation - and not through the counseling
center. He is looking at some kind of one-on-one discussion with a
"strong woman" or possibly a group program, maybe by a men's group on
campus, or something like that.
Also, if you think this is a crazy idea that will not help, let me know
that too, as I promised him I would pass along all of the feedback I
received!
Thanks - sorry for the two requests in one day and for
cross-postings...
Juliette
"It's so liberating and important for men to understand that they can
actually be friendly to women instead of playing some gender-specific
role, and that women are in most ways the same as they are. I think that
lots of women already know that, but not so many guys do." -my dad
