Hi
In reference to Bystander Approaches we address bystanders through
relating them to Zebras. Our mandatory New Student Orientation called
"No Zebras, No Excuses" is presented to 4,000 new students each year.
We sell black and white wristbands that are very popular. I believe
this reference has really taken hold, and is making a difference. When
I speak to universities I address the "Zebra" mentality as well. Please
reference the web sites below for more information.

Hi All,
A couple of weeks ago I asked what folks were doing in regard to
bystander approaches for violence prevention on their campuses. I did
not get a lot of responses, but what i did get was great. Thanks!
I said I would post a summary and meant to do so sooner, but you know
how the beginning of the semester can get away from you. So, below are
responses. Attached at documents developed by Juliette Grimmett at North
Carolina State. If you use these, please attribute the origin to her.
Thanks again,
Tom Schiff, Ed.D.

at Grand Valley State in MI, they have a really
great Peer Education group called Eyes Wide Open. It really encourages
students to move from bystander behavior to an interventionist.
The Florida Dept. of Health came out with a great video loop and a
poster campaign in 2005 that included by-standers. A good place to also
check is the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence website for
information on that.
We are starting to create a program like this at Oberlin College so I'd
welcome forwards from other schools. BTW, we do have something called
"THE PEACEKEEPERS" that attend large venues and look out for student
safety. AND we are creating an electronic bystander empowerment program
(to perhaps intersect w/student behavior on line, etc.).
I am doing some really great stuff over at NCSU that has seemed to be
quite successful. I am attaching the description of the program that I
do and the case scenarios. There are a variety of scenarios that I pick
and choose from, some tailored with Greek language, some for RA's, etc.
I am also attaching my pre/post test taht I administer. I just started
this activity this semester, and people really really like it-I haven't
had a chance to go through all of my pre/post tests, but there are very
clear differences just by briefly looking at them.

I agree - sick of the "date rape" term being thrown around
inappropriately. And yes, why can't they pick up the phone and call Men
Can Stop Rape? Or called Abby to interview her about rapists looking
for women who are drinking - that it's dangerous to assume that the
drugs are the "real" danger, etc.?
If they wanted some kind of glitzy story, they could have done it like
"To Catch a Predator," where they gave the "bystander" guys a fake drug,
and see if they used it right then in the bar. Then bust them.
Until the violence stops, Ben.

"I am lighting candles for Patreece Johnson, Renata Hill, Venice Brown,
and Terrain Dandridge whose real crime was being black, lesbian, and
daring to resist the intimidation and sexual harrassment of a
lesbophobic male. I hope and pray they are released very soon.
..Which of us, as women, has not had the experience of being accosted
late at night, crudely propositioned, harrassed with sexist hate speech?
How many of us have been knifed, beaten, shot, raped and murdered at the
hands of a man in an incident which began just like this one? How is
it a crime for us to be ready to defend ourselves?"
