What name would you prefer? We talked with many professionals and educators
on campuses and in communities throughout the country before coming up with
the name. Your comment about "less about taking care of each other" is a
surprise because we continue to hear from survivors who say this pledge is
the most proactive they have seen at showing support for survivors. Please
keep in mind this pledge is based on Bystander Involvement and it stresses
"I will inform all of my family, friends, and peers that if anyone ever
sexually touches them without their consent, I will fully support them (from
listening to helping them seek support from proper professionals). I will
treat all survivors of sexual assault with my respect and admiration."
I am asking these questions because we are always open to new suggestions.
What would you prefer for the name to be? What are your suggestions for
changing the content?
Sincerely,
Mike Domitrz

I really, really don't want to not be supportive of something that is
clearly meant to be, and probably is often, a positive initiative, but I
kind of don't really like the name "Pledge to Protect". It feels very
patriarchal: less about taking care of each other, understanding how and
when it is good to help and more about maintaining existing social
structures. Just a thought.

We know more and more campuses are utilizing the "Pledge to Protect" at
www.pledge2protect.org (completely free of cost and easy to implement).
>From the website, you download the 2 page form (1 page they take with
>them
and 1 page they sign to leave with you). You have everyone sign the pledge
throughout campus and your local communiites. Plus, each person signs the
full pledge and then they also sign a heart on the 2nd page. Then, you post
all the signed hearts in specific locations on campus and/or in town. If
you utilize the "Pledge to Protect", all we ask is to let us know your
results.
Sincerely,
Mike Domitrz

I am in intern at SUNY Fredonia's C.E.A.S.E. (Campus Education, Awareness,
Support and Effect) program and I am looking to create new programs for
Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Some of Fredonia's other student groups
already do programs such as Take Back the Night, but I was looking for some
new, fresh programs that Fredonia has never seen before, such as the Denim
Drive and Teal Ribbons, but does anyone else have any other suggesstions?
I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!

Hello,
Thank you for being so open to suggestions. I also did not like the pledge
name when I saw it, as it evokes men as heroes and women as people who need
to be protected (even if the pledge is for everyone).
What about the "I Won't Be a Bystander Pledge" or " I am not a Bystander" it
evokes an idea of accountability without heroism. I am sure other people on
this list have good ideas as well!

We are a relatively small liberal arts college with a student body of 4200.
We are in the process of applying for the OVW grant and are proposing a new
position of "sexual assault prevention coordinator." This person's primary
goals will be advocacy for victims and education/training on campus.
Where have you folks found is a good place for this position to be housed?
I am leaning towards either the Health Services or the Counseling Center.
What are the pros and cons of each?
Thanks in advance for your input.
