DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DOCUMENTARY TO BE SHOWN ON KENT CAMPUS
You are invited to attend a very special documentary in recognition of the
Domestic Violence Awareness Month .

Mending Spirits

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Kent State University
Women’s Resource Center will be showing the documentary, Mending Spirits on
Oct. 25, 2006.  Mending Spirits documents the emotional, spiritual and
psychological journeys of women who leave abusive relationships through
themes woven together with poetry, journal entries and artwork, celebrating
their healing and courage.  The women’s stories of survival and healing
convey pain, celebration and hope and are an inspiration for all women.

Monica Plunkett, director, producer and editor of Mending Spirits, will be
attending and available to talk with guests at a reception immediately
following the film.  Mending Spirits is Plunkett’s first effort at
filmmaking and she reached this destination on an unlikely journey of her
own.  She grew up in Youngstown and now resides in Cleveland Heights.   In
the early ‘90s, Plunkett became involved in a relationship that became
mentally and verbally abusive and finally at the point of departure, became
physically abusive.  “After leaving it was very difficult to put the
experience in to perspective and there was a recovery period that no one,
with the exception of women who had experienced abuse, seemed to
understand,” she, said, “and I wanted to change that.” Mending Spirits is
Plunkett’s first effort at filmmaking,

Co-sponsors of the event include the Kent State University Office of
International and Comparative Studies, the Student Multicultural Center,
and Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

Mending Spirits will be shown on Oct. 25, 2006, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kent
Student Center, Rm. 204.  The film is free and open to the public.  The
reception with Monica Plunkett will be held in Rm. 206 immediately
following the film.
