Position Title: Clinical Counselor
Position# 10247
Nature of the position:
This Clinical Counselor position combines generalist counselor duties
with a significant emphasis in clinical and outreach work with women
and includes a specific focus on trauma. Along with the generalist
counselor responsibilities described below, this counselor will also
assume a primary responsibility for training, supervising, and
consulting with other Counseling Center counselors and interns, as well
as other University Departments about issues involving treatment of
trauma and issues pertinent to women. Other desired areas of expertise
and interest include providing treatment to students struggling with
identity and personality issues. While not required, we prefer a
candidate who is trained, or willing to be trained in dialectical
behavior therapy.
As a generalist, this Clinical Counselor will share responsibilities
with other counselors for carrying out the multi-faceted mission of the
Counseling Center. The Center's mission places a high value on serving
a diverse population of students. The Counseling Center provides a
variety of services to help students with psychological, educational,
social, and developmental concerns. The Counseling Center also has an
APA approved pre-doctoral internship program.
The successful candidate will first be a well-rounded and energetic
professional who works comfortably both individually and as a team
player in providing effective Counseling Center programs. Especially
important is an ability to provide leadership in the area of emphasis
while working collaboratively with other Counseling Center staff.
Specific duties and responsibilities for work with women and trauma
survivors may include but are not limited to:
1. Serving as the primary Counseling Center staff contact for clinical
consultation and referral of trauma survivors, actively representing the
needs of and advocating for appropriate individual and group clinical
services for students who are trauma survivors.
2. Providing leadership for the Counseling Center's outreach activities
related to women's issues including but not limited to issues such as
violence against women. These outreach activities include programs
focused on community building and prevention.
3. Providing consultations and liaisons with University departments
including the Office of Women's Programs, the Department of Women's
Studies, other Student Affairs units and student communities and groups.
Specific Duties and responsibilities as a generalist counselor may
include, but are not limited to the following:
1. providing assessment and time-limited counseling and psychotherapy
for individuals and couples;
2. providing group counseling and psychotherapy;
3. participating in psychological emergency and trauma response;
4. participating in other outreach, training, and treatment team
activities;
5. training/supervising undergraduate paraprofessional service
providers;
6. participating in various Student Affairs activities and committees;
7. other duties as assigned.
The UIUC Counseling Center is a networked computer environment with
extensive use of electronic technology for scheduling, records, and
internal communication and web based technology for programming and
promotion. The successful candidate will need to have the capability of
working in such an environment.
Qualifications:
1. Doctorate in Clinical, Clinical/Community, or Counseling Psychology,
or Masters in Social Work is required.
2. Demonstrated interest, expertise, and experience in clinical and
outreach work with women's issues and trauma work is required.
3. Exposure to and understanding of feminist theory as it relates to the
psychology of gender is required.
4. Demonstrated ability to function at a high level as a generalist
counselor in a setting with both diverse clients and staff colleagues is
required.
5. License in Illinois or license-eligible background as a psychologist
or clinical social worker is required.
6. Previous experience in a college counseling center is preferred, but
not required.
Conditions:
1. Starting Date: August 1, 2006 or mutually acceptable date;
2. Appointment terms: 12-months with 24 working days vacation; full
time, regular position;
3. Candidates with all levels of relevant experience are encouraged to
